Accra Spare Kitchen (ASK) is Ghana’s first circular food economy initiative transforming surplus fresh food from the hospitality industry and food chain brands into nutritious, low-cost meals for Accra’s urban informal economy.
Approximately 3.2 million tonnes of food are wasted across the supply chain in Ghana, generating a cost of approximately 762.32 billion Ghana cedis, while half of the population experiences moderate to severe food insecurity (Global Food Banking, 2023). Food security analysis in Ghana reveals that 3.6million people are food insecure (GSS, 2020). Ghana has been experiencing significant food inflation affecting the purchasing power of the average Ghanaian to afford a healthy, nutritious diet.
We partner with food chain brands, hotels, and supermarkets to rescue fresh surplus food before it goes to waste.
Our certified nutritionists curate meal plans based on rescued real food ingredients with our affiliated chefs preparing nutritious meals with the rescued food
Set up pop-kitchen at targeted communities and offer our meal at low cost. In addition, we build awareness and educate our target audience on various food system topics including social media campaigns.
Sustain our program and operations through the sale of low-cost meals, corporate sponsorships (CSR partnerships), grants, and pay-it-forward donations.
An estimated 38.4% of Accra’s population reside in informal settlements (Agyabeng et al., 2022). With Accra total population of 5,455,692 according to the Ghana Statistical Service, our Total Addressable Market (TAM) is approximately 2 million Ghanaians in Accra, making it a significant and resilient market.
With current capacity, we project our Serviceable Available Market (SAM) to be approximately 7200 consumers in the short-term, should we have our needed support.
